Social Media Revolution: Thoughts on the video

Check out the Social Media Revolution video below. It is one of my favorites, and truly shows the rapid way in which Social Media is changing marketing.

There are two quotes from the video that really inspired me.

Successful companies in social media act more like Dale Carnegie and less like David Ogilvy Listening first, selling second.

Social Media articles always tell you to ‘listen” to what people are saying about you. But there is a difference between passively listening and actively listening. If you are actively listening to your friend, you show recognition, you show understanding. I see very few companies actively listening online. People will not believe your company is listening if no one is responding to their facebook posts or tweets. That’s just common sense.

The more you listen, the more that people will respect you enough to give you constructive feedback. Constructive feedback is worth its weight in gold, if you are not constantly evolving your business, your product to meet the needs of your core consumer, you are going to become irrelevant. All you will have left to do at that point is pick up the pieces and play catch up.

Successful companies in social media act more like party planners, aggregators, and content providers than traditional advertiser.

This is why I love Social Media, I loves parties. People are interesting, thoughtful, creative, and innovative. It just doesn’t make sense for companies not to tap into the energy of its community. The energy is contagious and the more your community believes in you, invests in you, the further your message will reach. People cause epidemics by being a part of them.
